Successfully installed LAMP (Linux,Apache,MySQL,PHP) server into Dell workstation. The main purpose is to make it a domain controller. Original installation was a Windows XP Pro and cannot be used as the domain controller. Cannot afford to buy a Windows Server and linux+samba is the only alternatives. Even though the release date is early June, not to late to mention that kamikaze is a new development branch for openwrt which support more hardware than whiterussian release. It also use 2.6 kernel but still not support broadcom wifi, need to use 2.4 wifi. The main advantage is the system configuration is store in file not nvram anymore. Personal SOCKS Proxy

June 11, 2007 on 9:59 am | In Internet | No Comments

If you got a Streamyx (or any other broadband) connection, you actually can have your own socks proxy which you can use at your office or school. All you need is just a supported Openwrt router e.g. Linksys WRT54G. Flash your router with Openwrt firmware and do usual setup to your ISP and get a dyndns domain name. Use that domain name to point to your router from outside. Utility called ez-ipupdate (openwrt package) can be used to mapped your domain. (If you got fixed ip just connect to your ip). You need to setup your firewall to accept WAN connection to port 22

Courses Review

June 11, 2007 on 8:42 am | In Academic | No Comments

We had a workshop to review our courses / subjects for Diploma and Degree in computer sciences. Our diploma program seems ok for now but we added industrial training and some minor changes. For degree, we revised all the software engineering courses to meet with ACM/IEEE requirements and industry needs.

Yesterday the government announced for curriculum review to be made in 3 years, currently 5 years. I think it is a good idea, it will ensure all the IPT curriculum is up to date and will satisfy industry needs.

My First Web Hosting & Domain Provider

June 1, 2007 on 9:29 pm | In Internet | No Comments

At last I got myself a personal web domain and hosting using godaddy.com. At first I just want to have my personal domain and use my home web server. They also provide free web hosting so tried it. Now I use both mine and their service to host my sites.

For a beginner, the settings for domain name is simple but confusing at the beginning. Though I’m IT literate, I’ve to find some solution on the Net in how to point to my home server and theirs. Their web hosting come with two choices, windows (for asp, .Net technology) or linux (php, pearl technology). They also provide pre-install application for your site e.g. wordpress.

I paid around USD 9/year for domain and USD 4/month for web hosting. Feel free to check out they website for more info.
